Shifting from Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative responses to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
