Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. The veteran actress presents a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, an aging actress reduced to presenting an aerobics show on television. Pushed out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to a secretive and gruesome process called "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a progressively parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, Paramount+

Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries with this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears sensing the poltergeist, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. Recruited by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1978 Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the children anxious. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he fears a fatal end. But the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet the lead actress succeeds to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4
