Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes
Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
